Trendwatch: The Future of Smart Living is IP-based

The future of smart living is IP-based, according to the Belgian company IPBuilding. By developing an IP-based platform that controls technology in buildings, they have given people a more comfortable, independent and safer way of life. “We have a solution that is based on the standards of today and tomorrow,” says Wim Rogghé,Technical Sales & Solutions Director at IPBuilding.

The digitalisation of the social care market

IPBuilding is an innovative Belgian company that specialises in the development of technology for smart homes, smart buildings and smart care. The company’s history began around the same time as people started showing interest in smart home solutions. As more and more people wanted to integrate devices of different manufacturers – such as heating, intercom, camera, ventilation and music devices – IPBuilding spotted a need on the market. They believed that the IP protocol was the only right way to communicate between devices of different manufacturers worldwide no matter what their function was. Based on this, they built a home automation system called IPBuilding, that is now so flexible that it can be adjusted and adapted according to very specific user needs.

The future builds on a worldwide standard

If you look around, you’ll see that all devices that are developed today can be connected to the same network and thereby communicate with each other. The benefit of IP-enabled solutions is that you don’t have to maintain multiple protocols, or in some cases multiple switches to handle other types of information. All this information could easily move through the same switch of the kind that already exists in most offices, homes and other facilities. IP is a worldwide “standard” protocol which makes it able to speak with devices all over the world.

In an IPBuilding system, all modules and software are connected to the same network. That means that integrators can easily integrate other IoT devices without any additional hardware. This makes the platform fully future proof, since the IPBuilding system can easily adapt itself to new standards in the market – over and over again.

An independent life – longer

For many, smart home solutions are a luxury, but for others it is about security and the possibility of an independent life. As an example: by offering a fully integrated emergency call system, managed by Skyresponse, the user is just a push of a button away from help when needed in their everyday life. For elderly people, this means that they can live longer in their own home, but with the same possibilities and care as they should receive in a care home.

A unique player on the market

We believe that IPBuilding stands out from its competitors by having an open protocol for integrations and being extremely easy to use. End users can easily change and modify everything by themselves without the help of technicians or installers, regardless of knowledge in technology.

Since 80% of the newly built buildings are based on traditional technology, IPBuilding wishes the buildings of the future to have better conditions built-in for smart solutions. Since they offer a wired solution, cables should already be in the ground prior to the solution being used. However, in order to make the solution accessible to all kinds of buildings, they are currently working on a wireless solution, which means that smarter homes and a more intelligent society are around the corner.

As the world, and especially technology, changes so quickly there is a need for an automation system that can easily adapt itself to the new standards – and that is exactly what an IPBuilding system can do.
